Rendez vous with Advocate Muniyappan
As part of the 75th-anniversary celebration of Indian Independence, Billabongers had the privileged opportunity to interact with our esteemed Guest Advocate Muniyappan. C, who enlightened the young minds on the Making of the Indian Constitution and the Role, Guidance and Statesmanship of Lawyers during the Freedom movement. His deliberation was a tribute to the Lawyers who tirelessly fought for our Independence through non-violent means. He briefly outlined the significance of the Constituent Assembly debates during the process of drafting the Indian Constitution and the contribution made by the army of lawyers namely Rajagopalachari, Mahatma Gandhi, Rajendra Prasad, Jawaharlal Nehru and many others in the struggle for Independence.Adv Muniyappan also shared about his inspirations, role model and his personal experience as a Panel member of the Legal Cell in Hon’ble Justice B.K. Somasekhara Commission of Inquiry(2008-2011). He also spoke about how lawyers were admired and respected the most in Indian society pre-independence and the change in scope of the profession from being dependent on civil cases to handling lucrative corporate law cases.
He explained to the Students about individual rights and group rights and the importance of Constitutionally guaranteed fundamental rights as enshrined in Article 19 of the Constitution and duties in Article 51A. In his closing remarks, he emphasized the role of youth in Nation Building and rendered some valuable suggestions for Billabongers towards shaping India as a civilized developed nation.
This Independence Day special interview with the eminent guest made our students understand and respect the Law of the Land, the Constitution of India and the Lawyer Profession and inspired them to join the profession. When asked what did they learn from the discourse, the students said in one voice “ Doctors save Lives and Lawyers save Dignity”.
